| When you log onto a web site, you have logged into a
web
hosting
service computer or server, even though you don't know that this is
happened. When you enter the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) or the web site
address (i.e. http://www.MDCMarketing.net), you are connecting to one of thousands of computers somewhere in the
world that are part of a network that hosts web traffic - this is called the
Internet. This service is a rough explanation of an ISP, where the ISP will provide computer users access to the Internet
and email via their own computers or servers. Sometimes ISPs will offer other additional services, a classic
example is America Online (AOL), Earthlink, etc.. A web hosting service will provide
server space for all files connected with your web site. A web hosting
service is to a web page as an ISP (Internet Service Provider) is to
Internet access - you must have them.
A hosting service hosts many web sites on their computers or servers and
provides all of the background access, file management, email and other support
necessary to maintain your web site's presence on the Internet. MDC
Marketing uses these support services to keep your web site up to date and
to handle any problems and/or requests that you may have.
When you get on the Internet, your first contact is with your ISP,
whether it be AOL, Prodigy, MSN or other similar services. You may connect in 1
of several methods:
- Dial Up - Using a modem that contacts your ISP over the telephone
lines and normally operates at an optimum speed of 57.6 *Kbps.
- ISDN - (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a relatively high
bandwidth transmission service that operates over ordinary telephone
copper wire as well as over other media and can transmit at rates up to
128 *Kbps of
- Cable, which comes through a cable modem then to your computer from your
cable TV supplier, is a high bandwidth (high capacity) service that can
transmit information up to 1.5 *Mbps.
- DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a high bandwidth (high capacity)
service that can transmit information from 512 *Kbps
up to 1.5 *Mbps similar to cable
access.
Faster connections will download web pages' data and graphics much
quicker. Your choice of connection types may be due to availability in
your area, financial or other reasons. MDC Marketing can advise you
regarding connection types also.
Your basic web site hosting fees can be paid monthly or annually (1
year contract) or bi-annually (2 year contract). Of course, annual and
bi-annual contracts offer a substantial savings and convenience over
monthly billing. Basic service includes virtually everything that you will
normally need for your web site. Click here for a list of services with
basic Web Site hosting.

* In data communications, bits per
second (abbreviated bps) is a common measure of data speed for computer
modems and transmission carriers. As the term implies, the speed in bps is
equal to the number of data bits transmitted or received each second.
Larger units are sometimes used to denote high data speeds.
One kilobit per second (abbreviated Kbps in the U.S.; kbps elsewhere) is
equal to 1,000 bps. One megabit per second (Mbps) is equal to 1,000,000 bps
or 1,000 Kbps. Fiber optic modems can send and receive data at many Mbps.
